Before Taking Phentemrine

Phentermine is a medication that helps in the treatment of obesity and it should be remembered that the drug should be taken not in itself, but when complemented with a regular exercise regimen and a healthy and well balanced diet. Before you take Phentermine, you need to remember that it is easy to abuse it especially if it is used without a prescription or if you use the medicine improperly. Make sure that the medicine is not stopped suddenly as it might lead to repulsive withdrawal symptoms. Ask the doctor how you need to avoid the symptoms once the medicine is stopped.

Things to Remember

You must not take Phentermine in case you are on an MAO inhibitor like Furoxone or furazolidone, Marplan or isocarboxazid, Nardil or phenelzine, Azilect or rasagiline, Emsam or Eldepryl or selegiline and Parnate or tranylcypromine for the last fortnight. Life threatening or serious side effects may crop up in case Phentermine is used prior to the clearing of the MAO inhibitor component out of your body. Having Phentermine along with other forms of dietary medications like Redux or dexfenfluramine and Phen-Fen or fenfluramine may lead to pulmonary hypertension which is a rarely occurring lung ailment. You should not take the medication along with any other drugs which are related to diet without first going into a consultation with your specialist. The drug should not be taken in case you have an allergy towards it, or have any of the following:

  • Disease of the coronary artery or hardened arteries
  • Cardiac ailments
  • Hyperactive thyroid
  • Unregulated or severe blood pressure
  • If the patient has a record of alcohol or drug abuse
  • Glaucoma
  • In case you have an allergy to any other dietary pills, stimulants, cold medications or amphetamines

If the patient has any of the following conditions, they might require a dosage adjustment of Phentermine or need to undergo special tests:

  • Diabetes

Category C Pregnancy as Specified by the FDA

According to the Food and Drug Administration, it is not proven whether Phentermine will affect an unborn baby in a woman who is going through Category C pregnancy. This is why you are advised to inform your doctor whether you intend to become pregnant or are pregnant while you have been recommended with Phentermine. The medicine may pass on to your breast milk and it could affect your nursing baby. This is why new moms are advised not to take Phentermine when they are breast feeding. The medication should not be given to children who are under 16 years of age.

Phentermine can be a habit forming drug and this is the reason why physicians advise that only the individual who has been recommended with it should use the medication. Hence, you must not share the medicine with anyone else, particularly if anyone has a long track record of addiction to or abuse of drugs. The medication should always be kept in a place which others are not able to access.
